Former MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi has given his backing to the sport's first night race in Qatar.
The season opener on 9 March is the first under floodlights, and after testing at the Losail circuit the Yamaha rider is happy with conditions.

"There was a lot of curiosity about this night test and I have to say that I am quite satisfied," Rossi said.

"I think they have made a great job with the lights and you can ride quite normally, as if it's day."

The Italian added: "The visibility is quite good so there is no danger for us. It's really no more difficult than riding in the day.

"Maybe it would be better to move this night race to a period when the temperature is a little bit higher, however, because at the moment it is very cold here."

It will be the first grand prix, two or four wheeled, to be held at night - as Formula One will follow MotoGP's lead when Singapore plays host to a night race for the first time in September.

Around 3,500 lighting units will be installed at the circuit, with MotoGP organisers claiming that the race will be the biggest sporting event to be staged under floodlights.

Current world champion Casey Stoner set the fastest pace on the opening day of testing and believes racing at night will be a challenge.

"It's definitely different to what we're used to," said the Australian. "It's not better or worse - it's just different.

"The most interesting thing is that with lower visibility, at least with regard to the imperfections on the track, you have to have more confidence than your instinct tells you to have. It's not a bad start though."

Reigning world superbikes champion James Toseland, who makes the switch to MotoGP this season, was fifth in practice and echoed the comments of his fellow riders.

"To end up fifth fastest on my first time here on the bike is really good," he said.

"They have done a fantastic job with the lights. I was here in November when just three corners were lit and to do what they have done is a great effort.

"You have to focus a bit more than normal and the only real problem was with the humidity."
